How to verify that my modem is installed correctly

Windows NT

Please follow the steps below to verify that your modem is installed correctly on Windows NT.

1. Press the Start button on the Windows task bar and select Settings > Control Panel. The following screen will appear:

2. Double click on the Modems icon. The following screen will appear:

In the Modem Properties dialog box above, you should see the name of every modem installed on your system and the COM port is assigned to. Make a note of the COM port number that the modem you want to test is on. In this example, there is a MultiTech Systems MT3824ZPW modem installed on COM port 2. Please note: If you do not see a modem here, there is not a modem installed on your system. You will not be able to Fax without a modem. Also, you may see more than one modem listed.

3. Even though there is a modem installed on your system, it does not mean that the modem is configured correctly. You now have to test the modem. You can use the HyperTerminal application to test the modem. Press the Start button on the Windows task bar and select Programs > Accessories > HyperTerminal > HyperTerminal. The following screen will appear

4. Enter your name in the screen above and press the OK button. The following screen will appear:

In the screen above you need to specify the COM port of the modem you want to test and press the OK button. If you forgot the COM port, please go back to step #2 and proceed from there. Please note: It is very important that you specify the COM port name and not the name of the modem. The following screen will appear:

5. When the screen above appears, press the OK button. The following screen will appear:

6. Using the mouse, place the cursor in the top left corner of the HyperTerminal window and type the letters at and hit enter. If the modem is installed and configured correctly, HyperTerminal will return OK. You are now ready to fax. Please see the screen shot below:

Please note: If nothing is returned or you get a value other than OK, the modem is not installed and configured correctly. Please contact the hardware manufacturer for assistance.
